Start With a Real WiFi Assessment
Slow WiFi is not always a WiFi problem. Internet service may be undersized, an aging switch may be limiting throughput, or a poor cable run may be causing an access point to underperform. Replacing hardware without identifying the source can waste budget and leave the original issue untouched.
A proper assessment looks at the full path from the internet connection to the end user. That includes the gateway, firewall, switches, Ethernet cabling, wireless access points, device load, building materials, and physical layout. Build Enough Capacity for Every Device
The question is not only how many employees use the network. It is how many devices connect at peak times, what those devices are doing, and how critical those connections are.
A 20-person office may have 60 or more active devices once phones, laptops, tablets, printers, conferencing systems, cameras, and guest devices are counted. A single all-in-one router built for a small home may connect them all, but it may not manage video calls, large file transfers, cloud backups, and guest browsing consistently at the same time.
Business-grade access points are designed to manage higher client density and more demanding traffic. Current WiFi standards can help, especially where employees use newer devices, but newer hardware alone does not fix a poorly designed network. The right equipment depends on square footage, client count, application demands, and growth plans.
For example, an office that primarily uses email and browser-based software has different needs than a design firm moving large files or a medical practice running cloud-based systems throughout the day. Plan for regular demand and peak demand, not just the quietest hour in the office.
Strengthen the Wired Network Behind the WiFi
Wireless access points are only as capable as the network feeding them. An access point with a fast wireless radio cannot compensate for an outdated switch, an overloaded uplink, or damaged cabling.
Modern access points may require Power over Ethernet, allowing one network cable to provide both data and power. This creates a cleaner installation and gives businesses flexibility to place access points where they are needed. However, the switch must provide the appropriate power budget and network speed. A structured cabling approach pays off over time. Guests should be able to access the internet without reaching shared files, printers, internal systems, or security devices. Businesses with cameras, access control, smart AV equipment, or other connected devices should also consider a separate network segment for those systems.

When a guest device is consuming excessive bandwidth or an unmanaged device is behaving unexpectedly, it is less likely to affect core business operations. Monitor the Network After Installation
